My Mission

At Art by Anya, I believe every painting should tell a story. Inspired by generations of artists and the experiences that have shaped my own life, I create original artwork that celebrates the images, animals, and places we hold dear. My mission is to preserve memories, evoke emotion, and create quality paintings that bring joy for generations to come.

Ya Gotta Have Art!

Art has always been part of my life

In fact, you could say I wouldn't even exist if it weren't for art.

My parents met as professional artists and college art professors, and creativity has been woven into my family's story for generations. My grandparents on both sides were artists in their own right, working in painting, enameling, and other creative mediums. My grandfather discovered wood carving at the age of eighty and spent his later years creating beautiful birds by hand—a reminder that it's never too late to discover a passion.

Growing up in that environment taught me that art isn't just something you create. It's how you tell stories, preserve memories, and connect with people.

As I raised my own children, I wanted them to experience that same creative environment. Our home was always filled with animals, art, imagination, and the freedom to create. Sharing that love of art with them has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I hope it continues to inspire future generations of our family.

After college, I began a career designing special events for both corporate and private clients throughout the Southeast. When the events of September 11th changed the direction of that career, I found my way into the classroom, where I taught photography, 2D art, and art history. Life continued to lead me in many different directions before it eventually brought me back to painting.

It was during one of the most difficult seasons of my life that I picked up a paintbrush again.

While caring for my father during the final year of his life, I rescued Tooka—a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix who arrived exactly when I needed him. His quiet companionship, endless loyalty, and unconditional love helped carry me through one of life's hardest chapters. He reminded me to slow down, breathe, and find peace again.

Painting became my peace. It still is.

Today, as my husband courageously goes through cancer treatment, my dogs and my painting continue to be my refuge. They ground me. They remind me that joy still exists, even during life's most difficult days.

I've shared my life with many Rhodesian Ridgebacks over the years, and each one has left an unforgettable mark on my heart. Jake, the love of my life, stood beside me as I raised my children as a single working mother. He was my constant companion and my rock. If you've ever loved a pet, you understand they are never "just animals." They're family.

My dogs have been there through every chapter of my life. They celebrate our happiest moments, comfort us through our hardest ones, and somehow manage to love us unconditionally every single day.

Their lives are far too short, but the footprints they leave on our hearts last forever.

That is why I paint.

Every portrait I create is about capturing more than a likeness. I want to preserve the spark in their eyes, the goofy smile that makes you laugh, the wisdom in an old friend's face, or the quiet comfort they bring simply by being nearby. As I paint, I think about the bond each pet shares with the people who love them, and I strive to capture that connection in every brushstroke.

My own dogs are usually lying on the studio floor while I paint, reminding me why I started this journey in the first place. Their calm presence, unwavering companionship, and unconditional love find their way into every portrait I create.

Nothing brings me greater joy than delivering a painting that makes someone smile, laugh, or even cry happy tears because they recognize not only the face of the companion they love, but the spirit that made them so unforgettable.

Thank you for trusting me with your family's story.

I can't wait to paint it.
